- was the first capital of Italy (from 1861 to 1865)
- it has the largest arcaded square in Europe: piazza Vittorio Veneto
- it has the largest Roman gate in the world: Porta Palatina
- here the first cinematographic projection was held in Italy
- it has the largest open-air market in Europe: Porta Palazzo
- here instant coffee was born, in 1884, following the invention of the machine to produce it
- the Egyptian Museum is the most important in the world, outside of Egypt
- The Mole Antonelliana was the tallest building in Europe until 1889
